Formation
Issu d'une famille aisée, Michael Curtiz fait des études artistiques ŕ l'université de Budapest, puis ŕ l'Académie royale du théâtre et des arts. Il entre au Théâtre national hongrois avant de contribuer, ŕ partir de 1912, ŕ la fondation du cinéma hongrois.
Carričre au cinéma
Lors de son arrivée ŕ Hollywood en 1926, celui qui va se faire appeler Michael Curtiz et associer ce nom ŕ l'époque glorieuse des studios compte déjŕ une riche carričre européenne. Si sa filmographie hongroise est mal connue, on sait qu'il exerce ŕ Budapest le métier d'acteur et de réalisateur, et qu'il met en scčne plusieurs adaptations littéraires. Il est notamment le réalisateur d'un des premiers succčs nationaux, Bánk Bán (1914). Contraint de quitter son pays lors de la guerre civile en 1919, il s'installe ŕ Vienne, oů il se rend célčbre en tournant de grosses machines historiques (L'Esclave reine, 1925) qui se comparent ŕ celles de Cecil B. DeMille. Aprčs un bref passage en Allemagne, l'aventure hollywoodienne commence. Pour la Warner dont il devient rapidement le symbole, il tourne plus de quatre-vingts films jusqu'en 1953. Artisan fidčle, il ne choisit gučre les sujets qui lui sont confiés et s'appuie sur des équipes et des méthodes bien huilées. Toutes les vedettes de la firme sont les siennes : Errol Flynn, Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Olivia De Havilland, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, Cary Grant, John Garfield, Lauren Bacall, pour ne citer qu'eux. Si la relative absence de thématique dans son oeuvre lui vaut rarement l'épithčte flatteuse d'auteur, une majorité d'exégčtes s'accorde pour admirer la somme des réussites qui se dégage d'un travail si fécond et éclectique. Michael Curtiz touche en effet ŕ tous les genres et laisse des films mythiques comme Casablanca (1942) ou le moins connu Passage to Marseille (1943) qui fixent le genre du film noir exotique. Il signe de trčs bons films d'épouvante (Docteur X, 1932 ; Masques de cire, 1933), une superproduction biblique (L'Arche de Noé, 1928), des films réalistes ŕ caractčre social (20 000 ans sous les verrous, 1933 ; Les Anges aux figures sales, 1938), des mélodrames (Le Roman de Mildred Pierce, 1945) ou des films historiques et politiques (Mission to Moscow, 1943). Mais c'est peut-ętre son cycle avec Errol Flynn qui révčle le mieux toutes les qualités de ce cinéaste. Son sens du récit, sa maîtrise des effets visuels et des mouvements d'appareils contribuent au charme durable de films d'aventures comme Les Aventures de Robin des Bois (1938), L'Aigle des mers (1940) ou Capitaine Blood (1935), ou de westerns ŕ la distribution éclatante (Les Conquérants, 1939 ; La Caravane héroďque, 1940). De son style que l'on qualifie souvent d'expressionniste, caractéristique de son influence germanique, il ne reste plus grand-chose aprčs son départ de la Warner en 1953. Son sens de l'ombre portée et un mélange bien ŕ lui d'idéalisme et de cynisme se retrouvent discrčtement dans L'Egyptien (1954), un péplum, et dans Les Comancheros (1961), ultime western avec John Wayne.
