Spencer Tracy entre à l'American Academy of Dramatic Arts de New York en 1922. Il fait le tour des agences de théâtre et obtient plusieurs petits rôles avant de triompher en 1930 dans The last mile.

Carrière au cinéma

John Ford remarque Spencer Tracy dans The Last mile et lui propose son premier rôle au cinéma dans Up the river, au côté d'un autre débutant, Humphrey Bogart. La Fox le lance comme un nouveau James Cagney. Son physique presque anonyme lui permet de se fondre dans tous les styles de personnages : gangster cynique dans Quick millions (1931) de Rowland Brown, prisonnier muré dans son silence dans 20 000 years in Sing Sing (Vingt mille ans sous les verrous, 1932) de Michael Curtiz, ou clochard tendre dans A man's catsle (Ceux de la zone, 1933) de Franck Borzage. La Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer l'engage en 1936 et lui offre des rôles et des réalisateurs à sa mesure : il tourne Fury de Fritz Lang, et San Francisco de Woodbridge Strong Van Dyke avec lequel il obtiendra sa première nomination aux Oscars. A partir de 1938, avec Boys town (Des hommes sont nés) de Norman Taurog, il se spécialise dans les rôles de figures paternelles pétries d'humanité avec quelques variations dans le registre des personnages odieux, notamment dans Edward, my son (1949) de George Cukor. Il paraît dans tous ses rôles d'un naturel désarmant. Ignorant le cabotinage, son jeu est des plus subtils : un clin d'oeil, un mouvement amorcé ou suspendu lui suffisent à exprimer toutes les nuances de son personnage.
Il tourne avec les plus grandes stars : Marlène Dietrich, Jean Harlow, Elizabeth Taylor, Gene Kelly. Aucune de ses prestations avec ces monstres sacrés ne peut pourtant se comparer à celle qu'il réalise avec Katharine Hepburn. George Cukor sait tirer profit au mieux de ce couple dans Madame porte la culotte (1949).
Il apparaît pour la dernière fois à l'écran en 1967 dans Devine qui vient dîner ? de Stanley E. Kramer, avec Katharine Hepburn : il termine le tournage le 26 mai et s'éteint le 10 juin. Il obtient pour ce film sa neuvième nomination aux Oscars.
