Formation
Après des études d'ingénieur, Adolphe Menjou se lance dans le music-hall et fait quelques apparitions au cinéma dès 1912.
Carrière au cinéma
Séducteur aux fines moustaches, Adolphe Menjou s'illustre le plus souvent dans des emplois sophistiqués, marqués par le sceau de la distinction ou de la noblesse. Après divers petits rôles à la Vitagraph, il s'impose en personnifiant Louis XIII dans Les trois mousquetaires (Fred Niblo, 1921), puis en mondain dans L'Opinion publique (1923), de Charlie Chaplin. En 1924, Ernst Lubitsch en fait un Premier ministre dans Paradis défendu. Accédant aux premiers rôles, il incarne un aristocrate dans La grande-duchesse et le garçon d'étage (Malcolm St-Clair, 1926) et Sérénade (Harry d'Abbadie d'Arrast, 1927). A l'avènement du parlant, Adolphe Menjou devient l'un des acteurs les plus en vue de Hollywood, prêtant son élégante stature à des personnages variés : rédacteur en chef dans The front page (Lewis Milestone, 1931), officier dans L'adieu au drapeau (F. Borzage, 1932), producteur de théâtre dans Pension d'artistes (G. La Cava, 1937) ou encore politicien dans L'enjeu (Frank Capra, 1948). En 1953, il s'illustre en policier zélé dans le film antisoviétique d'Elia Kazan, Man on a tightrope. Quelques années avant sa disparition, Stanley Kubrick le dirige dans Les sentiers de la gloire (1957), où il interprète un officier supérieur français cynique.

A la télévision, Adolphe Menjou joue dans les séries Target (1951), Your favorite story (1953) et Science-Fiction theater (1955-1957).
