Formation
Fils de comédiens, Jackie Coogan se produit au théâtre dès son plus jeune âge. Il n'a que deux ans lorsqu'il joue dans son premier film, Skinner's baby (Harry Beaumont, 1917).
Carrière au cinéma
Dans les mémoires, Jackie Coogan est avant tout l'enfant prodige qui fait face à Charlot dans The kid - Le kid (Charlie Chaplin, 1921). Son charmant minois ponctué d'une casquette trop grande conquiert alors le monde entier. Très demandé par les studios, il est également l'enfant-vedette d'Oliver Twist (Frank Lloyd, 1922) et de Tom Sawyer (John Cromwell, 1930). Arrivé à l'adolescence, le charme est rompu, et il doit se contenter de seconds rôles. Il défraie la chronique avec un procès intenté à sa mère et à son beau-père afin de récupérer sa fortune. Ses efforts ne lui rapportent pas grand-chose, sinon une loi spéciale, dite loi Coogan, qui protège les gains des enfants. Il est déjà un has been lorsqu'il divorce de Betty Grable en 1939, et c'est avec un soupçon de nostalgie qu'on aperçoit sa silhouette bedonnante après la guerre, dans des rôles de gangster antipathique (High school confidential - Jeunesse droguée, Jack Arnold, 1958, The big operator - Le témoin doit être assassiné, Charles Haas, 1959).
Autres activités
Dans les années 1950 et 1960, Jackie Coogan participe à plusieurs émissions pour la télévision, dont la série The Addams family (1964).
