Formation
Après avoir étudié le chant, la danse et la musique, Ramón Novarro débarque aux Etats-Unis à l'âge de quinze ans. Danseur dans la troupe de Marion Morgan, il est remarqué par le cinéaste Rex Ingram et débute comme figurant sur le tournage des Quatre Cavaliers de l'Apocalypse (1921).
Carrière au cinéma
Choisi pour succéder à Rudolph Valentino à la MGM, Ramón Novarro devient le nouveau "latin lover" de la firme, exhibant sa musculature et son teint halé dans une série de films spectaculaires de Rex Ingram : Le Roman d'un roi (1922), Scaramouche (1923) ou encore L'Arabe (1924). Sa popularité s'accroît encore en 1926 lorsque Fred Niblo lui confie le rôle-titre de Ben Hur. Si l'avènement du parlant lui permet un temps de faire entendre sa voix dans Chanson païenne (W.S. Van Dyke, 1930) et Le Chanteur de Séville (Charles Brabin, id.), Novarro est moins sollicité par Hollywood. Après une tentative de come-back en Europe dans La Comédie du bonheur (Marcel L'Herbier, 1939), Ramón Novarro n'assure plus que quelques prestations de second ordre (Les Insurgés, John Huston, 1949 ; La Diablesse en collant rose, George Cukor, 1960).
