Formation
Il débute dans le cinéma dès 1922, en ayant l'occasion de travailler aux côtés de Léonce Perret, Jacques Feyder et Ivan Mosjoukine. En 1925, il devient assistant du cinéaste Rex Ingram aux studios de la Victorine, à Nice. Il est ensuite tour à tour photographe de plateau (notamment sur Champagne et Blackmail d'Alfred Hitchcock), monteur et scénariste.
Carrière au cinéma
Réalisateur britannique méconnu et inclassable, Michael Powell a réalisé plus d'une cinquantaine de films entre 1931 et 1972. Il débute la réalisation par une serie de films courts à petit budget. Son premier film notable, The Edge of The World (1937), suscite l'intérêt du producteur et réalisateur Alexander Korda, qui lui permet de réaliser The Spy in Black (1939). Powell démarre ainsi, avec le scénariste du film, Emeric Pressburger, une collaboration de 15 ans. En 1940, il co-réalise Le Voleur de Bagdad, féerie en Technicolor, puis quelques films de propagande (dont 49e parallèle, en 1941). En 1943, il fonde avec Pressburger la maison de production The Archers, tournant notamment Colonel Blimp (1943) , I Know where I'm Going (1945), A Matter of Life and Death, avec David Niven (1946), Black Narcissus avec Deborah Kerr (1947), Les Chaussons rouges (1948), film musical sur l'univers de la danse (avec Anton Walbrook et Moira Shearer), qui obtient deux Oscars pour la musique et les décors, ou encore Les Contes d'Hoffman (1951). Après deux films de guerre en 1956, Powell réalise seul Peeping Tom / Le Voyeur (1959), dans lequel un cinéaste amateur filme en gros plan les femmes qu'il assassine. Powell s'attire les foudres d'une partie de la critique, ce qui brise sa carrière. Ce film est malgré tout, aujourd'hui, considéré comme l'un des films-phare du cinéaste, un film culte et un classique du cinéma d'épouvante. Par la suite, Powell tourne encore quelques films, notamment pour la télévision. Son oeuvre, qui donne une grande importance à la couleur, aux effets spéciaux et au tournage en studio, a été redécouverte grâce des réalisateurs et cinéphiles, parmi lesquels Scorsese, De Palma, Coppola ou encore Bertrand Tavernier.
