Interprète, Réalisateur, Scénariste, Assistant réalisateur, Opérateur steadycam
De 1910 à 1913, Oliver Hardy ouvre et prend la direction du premier cinéma de Milledgeville. Il débute sa carrière au cinéma en 1914 dans Outwitting dad et tourne plus de deux cents films jusqu'en 1925, comme comédien de complément. Il travaille au hasard de l'embauche pour les compagnies Vim, Pathé Studio, Vitagraph Studio , Lubin Studio, Edison Studio ou encore Gaumont Studio. A partir de 1921, il rejoint l'équipe de Larry Semon où il continue à jouer les terreurs, et dont il deviendra l'assistant jusqu'au début de 1926. Il signe en février 1926, un contrat d'exclusivité pour Hal Roach Studio. Alors que Laurel et Hardy sont tous deux sous contrat chez le producteur Hal Roach, ce dernier entrevoit le potentiel comique de leur association. La nature de leurs rapports et les contours de leurs personnages sont fixés durant une période de transition (1926-1927) riche d'une dizaine de courts-métrages. Le duo est mûr : Hardy, par sa corpulence, devient le chef prétentieux du tandem ; il est aussi l'éternelle victime des maladresses de son comparse Laurel, qui affiche le plus souvent un sourire ahuri. A la fin des années 1920, Laurel et Hardy figurent dans un grand nombre de courts-métrages souvent réalisés par Leo McCarey. C'est dans cette période que l'on trouve les films les plus mémorables, où les deux comiques déclenchent des avalanches de destructions : Battle of the Century (1927), Two Tars (1928), Big Business (1929). Le duo passe sans difficulté du muet au parlant et participe à des courts-métrages jusqu'en 1935. Avec The Music Box (1932), ils remportent l'Oscar du meilleur court-métrage comique. Dans leurs longs métrages, leur comique s'essouffle quelque peu (Fra diavolo, 1933, d'Hal Roach et Charles Rogers ; La Bohémienne, 1936, de James W. Horne et Charles Rogers). A la fin des années 1930, ils retrouvent de l'inspiration dans une série de longs métrages, dont Têtes de pioche (1938) de John G. Blystone, fruit d'une collaboration avec Harry Langdon. Ils se séparent d'Hal Roach en 1940 et signent, sans enthousiasme, un contrat avec deux grands studios, la 20th Century-Fox et la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, pour huit films. Peu à l'aise dans ce nouveau contexte, ils apparaissent très vite fatigués. En 1950, ils figurent dans un film français, Atoll K de Léo Joannon. Plus populaires en Europe qu'aux Etats-Unis, Laurel et Hardy forment le tandem comique le plus célèbre et le plus mythique de l'histoire du cinéma. A force de situations saugrenues et de bêtises, ils n'ont pas leur pareil pour souligner l'absurdité de la vie en société. Promenant leur solitude de comiques dans un monde en désordre permanent, ils dévoilent la part de folie contenue dans le quotidien mais aussi dans le coeur des hommes. Même s'il est difficile de les dissocier, il est possible d'attribuer à Laurel, cheville ouvrière du duo, un génie pour le burlesque qui lui vaut l'admiration de beaucoup de ses pairs, de Charlie Chaplin à Jerry Lewis.
