Formation
Commis dans un magasin d'accessoires photographiques, James Wong Howe aborde le cinéma en 1917 comme assistant opérateur. En 1923, il est directeur de la photographie aux Famous Players (la future Paramount).
Carrière au cinéma
James Wong Howe est assistant opérateur de Cecil B. De Mille de 1917 à 1922. Durant la période du muet, il travaille principalement avec Victor Fleming, Herbert Brenon et Allan Dwan. Il s'adapte au parlant dès 1928 dans des films de William Nigh (Four walls) et Raoul Walsh (The Criminal code, 1930). Suivent Viva Villa ! (Jack Conway, 1934), Strawberry blonde (Raoul Walsh, 1941), Les Bourreaux meurent aussi (Fritz Lang, 1943), La Rose tatouée (The Rose Tatto, Daniel Mann, 1955), Le Plus sauvage d'entre tous (Martin Ritt, 1962). Tous les films auxquels James Wong Howe a collaboré portent sa griffe : accusation des contrastes, composition très travaillée avec des mariages de teintes inattendus dans les films en couleur. D'ailleurs, l'univers de Wong Howe est en noir et blanc, et il a finalement tourné peu de films en couleur. C'est pourtant un film en couleur qui sera son préféré : The Molly maguires (M. Ritt, 1969). Il accomplit encore quelques prouesses dans This property is condemned (Sydney Pollack, 1966). Son dernier film, Funny lady (Herbert Ross), est tourné en 1974.
James Wong Howe a également dirigé trois films dans les années 1950 : The World of Don Dingman (court métrage sur un peintre chinois, 1953), Go, man, go ! (1954) et The Invisible avenger (1958).
Autres activités
James Wong Howe a travaillé pour la télévision. Il a notamment réalisé, en 1961, Biography of o Rookie James Wong Howe.
