Formation

A l'âge de dix ans, Henry Hathaway tourne sous la direction d'Allan Dwan. Accessoiriste puis assistant de Josef von Sternberg et de Victor Flemming, il passe par tous les métiers du cinéma avant de découvrir la réalisation en 1932.

Carrière au cinéma

Henry Hathaway finalise son apprentissage de la réalisation entre 1932 et 1934 et réalise sept westerns, remakes parlants de films muets adaptés de romans de Zane Grey et interprétés pour la plupart par Randolph Scott (Heritage of the desert, 1933 ; The thundering herd, 1934). En 1934, la Paramount lui confie la direction de la star maison, Gary Cooper, dans Now and forever (C'est pour toujours). Le succès vient un an plus tard avec The lives of a Bangal lancer (Les trois lanciers du Bengale), film à la gloire de la politique coloniale britannique. Toujours en 1935, Henry Hathaway s'éloigne des pistes du western et du film d'aventures et réalise Peter Ibbetson, dont André Breton dit qu'il est "le triomphe de la pensée surréaliste".
Après cette création très personnelle, Hathaway se contente de mettre en scène les scénarios qu'on lui propose. Fidèle au western jusqu'à la fin des années 1960, il fait tourner les plus grandes stars du genre : Randolph Scott, Gary Cooper, Tyrone Power, Richard Widmark et, bien sûr, John Wayne. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il se fait une spécialité du film noir d'inspiration néo-réaliste avec Kiss of death (Carrefour de la mort, 1947), où retentit le rire dément de Richard Widmark en tueur sadique.
Souvent considéré comme un tâcheron du western, Henry Hathaway signe pourtant quelques films très personnels : Rawhide (L'attaque de la malle-poste, 1950) est le premier western en espace clos aux proportions de tragédie classique, avec unité de temps, de lieu et d'action ; Niagara (1953), subtile étude psychanalytique teintée d'érotisme, contribue à forger le mythe Marylin ; The bottom of the bottle (Le fond de la bouteille, 1956) démontre la capacité du réalisateur à manier les acteurs dans le sens de la crédibilité psychologique. Son dernier succès est True grit (Cent dollars pour un shérif, 1969), où John Wayne campe un shérif vieillissant engagé par une adolescente pour retrouver l'assassin de son père.
Derrière ce réalisateur trop fécond, un goût affirmé pour les sujets bizarres (Quatorze heures, Courrier diplomatique, Rawhide) laisse deviner un auteur avorté.
