Formation
Diplômé en journalisme de l'université Columbia de New York, Irwin Allen débute comme chroniqueur au Key Magazine à Hollywood. Après un passage à la radio en tant que rédacteur, producteur et réalisateur, il s'oriente vers la télévision, où il crée l'émission "Hollywood Merry-Go-Round", spécialisée dans l'interview de vedettes de tout acabit. Devenu l'agent de nombreux scénaristes et romanciers, il monte en 1948 sa propre agence publicitaire et littéraire, et se lance dans le cinéma.
Carrière au cinéma
Spécialiste du genre aventures et catastrophes, Irwin Allen débute au cinéma en tant que producteur associé sur Le voyage sans retour (John Farrow, 1950) puis Double dynamite (Irving Cummings, 1951). Producteur, réalisateur et scénariste des documentaires naturalistes The sea around us (1952) et The animal word (1956), il se lance en 1957 dans la réalisation de films de fiction. Après avoir retracé l'histoire de l'humanité dans The story of mankind, Irwin Allen s'oriente vers le film d'aventures spectaculaires avec Le monde perdu (1960), Voyage au fond de l'océan (1961) et Cinq semaines en ballon (1962), adapté de l'oeuvre de Jules Verne. Divers contrats avec la télévision l'éloignent des plateaux de cinéma durant une dizaine d'années. Son retour marque le lancement des films catastrophe, genre dans lequel il triomphe grâce à sa maîtrise des effets spéciaux. Producteur de plusieurs pièces maîtresses comme L'Aventure du poséidon (Ronald Neame, 1973) et La tour infernale (John Guillermin, 1974), il poursuit jusqu'à la fin des années 1970, avec notamment L'inévitable catastrophe (1977) et Le dernier secret du poséidon (1979), qu'il réalise lui-même.
Autres activités
Très présent à la télévision dans les années 1960, Irwin Allen crée et produit plusieurs séries d'aventures fantastiques et de science-fiction à succès, comme Voyage au fond des mers (1964-1968), Lost in space (1965-1968) et Au coeur du temps (1966-1967).
