Formation
Dessinateur et scénariste à ses débuts, Roy Del Ruth s'oriente vers la réalisation en 1920. Il signe plusieurs courts métrages burlesques.
Carrière au cinéma
Réalisateur du premier film parlant de la Warner Bros (The Terror, 1928), Roy Del Ruth s'illustre d'abord dans la comédie mordante Blessed Event (1932). Il signe ensuite de grandes comédies musicales tels Folies-Bergère (1935), puis à la MGM, Broadway Melody of 1936 (id.). Dans ce registre, Du Barry was a lady (1943) est son meilleur film. Spécialiste des grands spectacles, il suit également la mode des films d'épouvante et réalise notamment une adaptation de la nouvelle d'Edgar Poe, Phantom of the rue Morgue (1954). Roy Del Ruth est aussi le cinéaste de la première version portée à l'écran de l'oeuvre de Dashiell Hammett, Le Faucon maltais (1931), intrigue policière autour d'une mystérieuse statuette.
