Formation
Henry King quitte l'école après ses études secondaires.
Carrière au cinéma
Henry King commence sa longue carrière de producteur-réalisateur en 1912 avec Serial. Il devient un des pionniers du cinéma américain, un des premiers à utiliser la couleur et le cinémascope. Il joue et met en scène The Nemesis (1915) et surtout 23 1/2 hours leave (1919), son premier grand succès. Il dirige ensuite plusieurs westerns. Dès 1921, il crée, avec le comédien Richard Barthelmess, une nouvelle maison de production, Inspiration Films, et obtient un premier grand succès commercial : David le tolérant (1921), qui retrace la vie rurale du Sud. Il entre alors dans le cénacle des grands réalisateurs hollywoodiens. Il tourne des films à gros budgets comme La soeur blanche (1923), Romanola (1924), Le sublime sacrifice de Dallas (1925), Barbara, fille du désert (1926). Sa carrière culmine dans les années trente. Il met en scène les films de la Fox pendant plus de trente ans et découvre de futures stars comme Janet Gaynor, Henry Fonda et Gregory Peck. La foire aux illusions (1933), A travers l'orage (1935), L'heure suprême (1937) et L'incendie de Chicago (1938) séduisent les spectateurs. Issu d'une famille très religieuse, de confession méthodiste, il se convertit au catholicisme et réalise Le chant de Bernadette, une fresque sur la France profonde sous Napoléon III. Après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, il dirige des films de guerre dont Un homme de fer (1949). L'adaptation de romans d'écrivains célèbres, tels que Ernest Hemingway ou Scott Fitzerald, l'attire. Il va notamment superviser Les neiges du Kilimandjaro (1952), Le soleil se lève aussi (1957), Bravados (1958) etTendre est la nuit (1961), son dernier film.
Autres activités
Henry King débute dans une troupe de théâtre où il joue surtout des pièces de vaudeville.
