Il est le fils de l'actrice Jill Balcon et du poète irlandais Cecil Day-Lewis (dont le nom de plume est Michael Nicholas), et le petit-fils du producteur Michael Balcon. Il a partagé un temps la vie de la comédienne Isabelle Adjani, avec qui il a eu un fils. Il est marié à Rebecca Miller, interprète et auteur, avec qui il a deux enfants.|#|#

Formation

Daniel Day-Lewis suit une formation à la Bristol Old Vic School et la Royal Shakespeare Company. Après une apparition à l'âge de quatorze ans dans Un dimanche comme les autres (1971) de John Schlesinger, il joue régulièrement au théâtre et débute véritablement au cinéma au début des années 1980.

Carrière au cinéma

Après quelques apparitions (Gandhi, 1982, de Richard Attenborough ; The Bounty, 1983, de Roger Donaldson), Daniel Day-Lewis fait une entrée fracassante dans le monde du cinéma avec son interprétation dans My beautiful laundrette (1985) de Stephen Frears. Les critiques saluent le rôle du jeune homosexuel punk, partagé entre le racisme de ses copains et son amour pour un immigré pakistanais. La même année il joue un jeune bourgeois dans Chambre avec vue (James Ivory) et prouve ainsi l'éclectisme de son jeu. Une diversité que l'on retrouve dans L'Insoutenable légèreté de l'être (1987, Philip Kaufman), puis par son rôle de composition d'un handicapé dans My left foot (1988, Jim Sheridan), véritable performance saluée à travers le monde qui lui vaut l'Oscar du meilleur acteur.
Après une retraite de trois ans, il revient à l'écran sous les traits du Dernier des Mohicans (1991) de Michael Mann, un rôle physique en complète opposition avec celui d'un avocat prisonnier des conventions qu'il interprète dans Le Temps de l'innocence (1992, Martin Scorsese). Daniel Day-Lewis n'est pas un acteur carriériste, il tourne quand il en ressent le besoin et donne beaucoup d'importance à la préparation de ses personnages. Il en donne la preuve en 2000 avec le rôle de Bill le Boucher dans Gangs of New York de Scorsese. Dans le New York du XIXe siècle, il interprète à merveille le chef des Native Americans assoiffé de sang pour parvenir au pouvoir.
Il rencontre à nouveau un grand succès avec There will be blood (2007) de Paul Thomas Anderson. Il incarne un prospecteur de terres sans états d'âme en quête de fortune aux débuts des exploitations pétrolières. Sa prestation, largement reconnue, est récompensée en 2008 par un Golden Globe, un BAFTA et l'Oscar du meilleur acteur.
Par la suite, il change radicalement de registre en interprétant un grand réalisateur tiraillé entre plusieurs femmes dans la comédie musicale Nine (2008) de Rob Marshall.
