Formation
À 18 ans, après avoir obtenu son diplôme de l'école secondaire de New Haven, Ernest Borgnine s'enrôle dans la marine, et y reste pendant dix ans jusqu'à son départ en 1945. Après quelques emplois dans des usines, Borgnine s'inscrit à la Randall School of Dramatic Arts (Hartford, Connecticut), puis après avoir terminé sa formation, il rejoint Robert Porterfield le fondateur du Barter Theatre à Abingdon, Virginie. Il y séjourne pendant quatre ans, faisant des petits boulots et jouant tous les types de rôle imaginables. Il fait ses débuts d'acteur à Broadway en jouant un infirmier dans la pièce Harvey.
