Fille du célèbre comique Eddie Joan Blondel, Joan Blondell écume avec sa famille les théâtres du monde avant de débuter à Broadway dans les Ziegfeld Follies.
Carrière au cinéma
Star de la Warner à l'avènement du parlant, Joan Blondell opte pour des comédies musicales légères comme Convention city (Archie Mayo, 1933) ou Les Chercheuses d'or (Mervyn LeRoy, id.). Capable, par sa seule présence, d'adoucir l'atmosphère des plus âpres polars (Ennemi public, William A. Wellman, 1931) et des drames les plus durs (The Crowd roars (Howard Hawks, 1932), elle sait aussi se mettre en valeur dans des comédies comme The Greeks had a word for them (Lowell Sherman, id.). Au début des années 1940, Joan Blondell s'oriente avec succès vers les rôles de composition (Topper returns, Roy Del Ruth, 1941 ; Le Kid de Cincinnati, Norman Jewison, 1965).
