Formation
Fils de parents sourds-muets, Lon Chaney apprend tout naturellement à utiliser ses mains et son corps pour s'exprimer. Fort de ces qualités, il devient acteur dans le théâtre de son frère avant de partir pour Hollywood.
Carrière au cinéma
Celui que l'on surnomme " l'homme aux mille visages " débute sa carrière en 1917 dans des westerns où il prête le plus souvent son visage patibulaire à des rôles de traître. Parallèlement à ses interprétations, l'acteur s'intéresse de près au maquillage déformant, maquillage qui devient vite une spécialité et doit bientôt faire sa renommée dans le cinéma d'épouvante. Après son rôle de paralytique dans The miracle man (1919) de George Loane Tucker, l'homme se fait cul-de-jatte dans The penalty (1921) de Wallace Worsley. En 1923, ce réalisateur lui offre le rôle de Quasimodo dans Notre-Dame de Paris. Son interprétation, renforcée là encore par un maquillage exceptionnel - bosse dans le dos, jambes difformes et visage défiguré - lui apporte la gloire. L'acteur rencontre bientôt le réalisateur Tod Browning. Celui-ci, grand amateur de cirque et des phénomènes de foire, lui offre des rôles de composition. L'acteur y fait étalage d'un jeu qui transcende le caractère répulsif de ses personnages, les rendant attachants. Les deux hommes collaborent sur sept films. Déguisé en vieille femme criminelle dans Le club des trois (1925), borgne dans La route de Mandalay (1927), le voici manchot dans L'inconnu (1927) avant de jouer les vampires aux yeux exorbités dans Londres après minuit (1927), film dans lequel il interprète deux personnages. En 1930, Lon Chaney joue une dernière fois dans un remake parlant du Club des trois de Jack Conway.
Autres activités
Celui que l'on appela " L'homme aux milles visages " n'a pas dévoilé ses secrets de maquillage. Cependant, Lon Chaney écrivit l'article sur le maquillage dans l'Encyclopedia Britannica.
