Formation
Venu du cirque, Wallace Beery débute sa carrière à Broadway avant de rejoindre Hollywood en 1913.
Carrière au cinéma
Wallace Beery a le physique de l'emploi. Son allure de brute lui apporte aussitôt des rôles de traître et de gangster. Souvent opposé aux stars de l'époque, comme Buster Keaton dans Les trois âges (1923) ou Douglas Fairbanks dans The mollycoddle (V. Fleming, 1920), Wallace Beery devient une vedette. De nombreux cinéastes construisent des films autour de sa personnalité, en en adoucissant progressivement le profil : Les mendiants de la vie (William Wellman, 1928). Forçat dans The big house (W. Will, 1930), boxeur sur le déclin qui prend un enfant sous son aile dans Le champion (King Vidor, 1931), il interprète également des personnages hauts en couleur : pirate dans L'île aux trésors (V. Fleming, 1934), Pancho Villa dans Viva Villa ! (Howard Hawks, 1934).
