William Joseph Patrick, dit Pat O'Brien, est né le 11 novembre 1899 à Milwaukee (Etats-Unis). Il est mort le 15 octobre 1983 à Santa Monica (Etats-Unis).
Carrière au cinéma
Acteur d'origine irlandaise, Pat O'Brien fit carrière à Brodway avant de débuter à l'écran en 1931 dans The Front page de Lewis Milestone. Acteur de composition au jeu sobre et économe, il se distingue surtout par ses seconds rôles au côté de James Cagney (Voilà la flotte, Lloyd Bacon, 1934 ; Brunes, Howard Hawks, 1936), (Les Anges aux figures sales, Michael Curtiz, 1938). Il obtient toutefois la vedette de deux films : Tête brûlée (1932), de John Ford, où il est pilote de l'Aéropostale, et Lampes de Chine (1935), de Mervyn LeRoy. En 1959, il incarne le rôle caricatural d'un policier dans Certains l'aiment chaud (Billy Wilder).
