- Né de parents comédiens, Mickey Rooney se marie huit fois, notamment avec Ava Gardner en 1942 et avec Martha Vickers en 1949. Son fils, Tim Rooney, issu de son mariage avec Betty Jane Rase, est aussi acteur. Depuis 1975, il est l'époux de la chanteuse Jan Chamberlain.

Formation
Joe Yule Junior monte sur scène pour la première fois à deux ans et débute au cinéma à six. De 1927 à 1934, il est Mickey MacGuire, le héros de plus de soixante-dix courts-métrages. Il adopte le nom de Mickey Rooney en 1932, lorsqu'il signe son contrat avec la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).
Carrière au cinéma
La popularité de Mickey Rooney vient principalement de son travail sous contrat à la MGM. Entre 1937 et 1946, il incarne Andy Hardy, au côté de Judy Garland, dans une série de quinze épisodes. De A family affair (1937) de George B. Seitz à Love laughts at Andy Hardy (1946) de Willis Goldbeck, il joue l'adolescent préoccupé de voitures et de filles, mais attaché aux valeurs familiales. Grâce à cette série de films, il devient une des vedettes les plus populaires des Etats-Unis ; entre 1938 et 1940, il est numéro un au box-office. Le couple Garland-Rooney illustre aussi trois comédies musicales endiablées de Busby Berkeley : Babes in arms (1939), Strike up the band (1940) et Débuts à Broadway (1941). La carrière de Mickey Rooney est interrompue par la guerre. Son contrat avec la MGM prend fin en 1948. Il fonde alors sa maison de production. Il tourne avec son ami Richard Quine une série de comédies militaires et un étonnant film policier, Drive a crooked road (1954). En 1957, L'Ennemi public de Don Siegel, dans lequel l'acteur incarne avec force un gangster psychopathe, connaît un véritable succès. La carrière de Mickey Rooney a la particularité d'être très variée. Il montre son entrain dans des films d'aventures mouvementés, tel Un monde fou, fou, fou (1963) de Stanley Kramer. Il joue aux côtés des Charlots dans Bons baisers de Hong Kong (1975) d'Yvan Chiffre. Il interprète régulièrement des films destinés aux jeunes spectateurs, comme Peter et Elliott le dragon (1977) de Don Chaffey pour Walt Disney Pictures et L'Etalon noir (1979) de Carroll Ballard.
Autres activités
Mickey Rooney s'intéresse au théâtre et à la mise en scène. Après avoir fondé sa compagnie de production, il dirige seul My true story en 1951, film dans lequel il n'apparaît pas. En 1990, il monte un show à Broadway : Sugar babies reprend tous les grands airs hollywoodiens de l'âge d'or du cinéma américain.
A la télévision, il présente en 1954 et en 1955 son propre show, The Mickey Rooney show. Il participe à d'autres émissions télévisées, comme The Dean Martin show avec Frank Sinatra. Il tourne plusieurs téléfilms. Dans le feuilleton Mickey, il a son fils Tim pour partenaire.
A ses heures perdues, Mickey Rooney peint et écrit. Search for Sonny Skies, publié en 1994, est un mélange de mystère et d'empreintes autobiographiques.
