Formation
Féru de cinéma fantastique, Ray Harryhausen se lance dans la réalisation de films d'animation en amateur alors qu'il poursuit des études de sculpture au Los Angeles City College. Après la guerre, il produit et réalise des courts métrages d'animation de poupées. Remarqué par Willis O'Brian, créateur de King Kong (1933), Ray Harryhausen débute au cinéma comme assistant sur Mighty Joe Young/Monsieur Joe (1946), d'Ernest B. Schoedsack.
Carrière au cinéma
Maitre de l'animation en motion picture, coordinateur d'effets spéciaux et visuels, créateur entre autres des célèbres squelettes de Jason et des Argonautes, Ray Harryhausen a influencé de nombreux réalisateurs parmi lesquels Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park) ou Tim Burton (Mars Attacks).
Ray Harryhausen crée ses premières créatures préhistoriques et apocalyptiques pour Le Monstre des temps perdus (Eugene Lourié, 1953) et The Beast from 20 000 Fathoms/Le Monstre vient de la mer (Robert Gordon, 1953). Concepteur du procédé Dynamation, il donne l'illusion du mouvement en filmant image par image des modèles articulés de sa fabrication. Abandonnant pour un temps les animaux, il se tourne vers la science-fiction à partir de 1955 avec Earth vs. The Flying Saucers/Les soucoupes volantes attaquent (Fred F. Sears) et Twenty Million Miles to Earth/A des millions de kilomètres de la Terre (Nathan Juran, 1956) ; puis vers le cinéma féerique et mythologique avec The Three Worlds of Gulliver/Les Voyages de Gulliver (Jack Sher, 1959), Jason and the Argonauts/Jason et les Argonautes (Don Chaffey, 1963) et Clash of the Titans/Le Choc des Titans (Desmond Davis, 1980).
Source inépuisable pour l'imaginaire de ce magicien, Les Contes des Mille et Une Nuits servent également le talent de Ray Harryhausen, dans la création de nombreuses créatures fantastiques notamment dans The 7th voyage of Sinbad/Le Septième Voyage de Sinbad (Nathan Juran, 1957), The Golden Voyage of Sinbad/Le Voyage fantastique de Sinbad (Gordon Hessler, 1973) et Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger/Sinbad et l'oeil du tigre (Sam Wanamaker, 1977).
En 1946, Ray Harryshausen produit et réalise une série de courts métrages d'animation de poupées dont Mother Goose Presents, Old Mother Hubbard et The Queen of Hearts.
