Formation
William Henry Pratt part à l'âge de vingt-deux ans au Canada. Il change de nom et se lance dans le théâtre. En 1916, il commence à faire de la figuration au cinéma.
Carrière au cinéma
En 1918, Boris Karloff joue dans un premier film, Sa majesté l'américain. En 1919, il est remarqué dans un film d'Howard Hawks, The criminal code. Cette même année, le réalisateur James Whales travaille sur l'adaptation de Frankenstein, le roman de Mary Shelley. Appuyé par le maquilleur Jack Pierce sensible à ses suggestions, Karloff décroche le rôle du monstre. En 1931, le monde le découvre sous les traits de cette créature légendaire. Dès lors, l'acteur ne se voit proposer que des rôles du même type. Pendant des dizaines d'années, il joue dans des films d'épouvante et interprète des personnages terrifiants : de nouveau Frankenstein dans La fiancée de Frankenstein (1935) de James Whales et dans Le fils de Frankenstein (1939) de Rowland W. Lee, il revêt les traits d'une momie revenue à la vie dans The mummy (1932) de Karl Freund puis ceux d'un savant fou dans Le chat noir (1934) d'Edgar Ulmer. Du zombie au vampire, en passant par un suppôt de Satan ou un profanateur de tombes, il incarne toutes les figures du Mal. Sa mine inquiétante lui permet de jouer dans des films d'aventures : il campe un chef indien dans Les conquérants du nouveau monde (1947) de Cecil B. De Mille. En 1959, Karloff revient en Angleterre. Il se défait des rôles de monstres et joue des gentlemen britanniques. Dans The venetian affair (Minuit sur le grand canal, 1967) de Jerry Thorpe, il est un savant qui combat une organisation terroriste. En 1968, il apparaît pour la dernière fois au cinéma dans Targets de Peter Bogdanovitch, où il joue son propre rôle de vedette du cinéma d'horreur qui prend sa retraite à cause d'un monde réel plus violent que ses films.
Autres activités
De retour en Angleterre, Boris Karloff tourne pour la télévision, où il incarne en 1953 un détective britannique dans la série Colonel March de Scotland Yard, réalisée par Cyril Enfield.
Il travaille pour la radio : il lit tous les soirs des contes d'Andersen pour les enfants.
