Formation
Danseuse dès l'âge de six ans dans la troupe d'Isadora Duncan, Elsa Lanchester apparaît dix ans plus tard sur les planches à Soho.
Carrière au cinéma
Femme de l'imposant Charles Laughton, Elsa Lanchester débute à Hollywood au début des années 1930. Actrice excentrique, elle s'illustre dans plusieurs rôles de composition comme Anne de Clèves dans La vie privée d'Henri VIII (1933), d'Alexander Korda, avant de triompher dans le rôle-titre de La fiancée de Frankenstein (James Whale, 1935). Sa chevelure dressée sur la tête marquée de deux zébrures restera célèbre. Régulièrement opposée à son mari, Charles Laughton, elle lui tient notamment tête dans Témoin à charge (Billy Wilder, 1957), rôle qui lui vaut une nomination aux Oscars.
