Destiné à devenir musicien, Robert Taylor est repéré en 1931 par un agent de cinéma alors qu'il interprète une chanson dans les studios d'une radio.

Carrière au cinéma

Son physique avantageux, répondant parfaitement aux canons de la beauté institués alors par Hollywood, lui permet d'accéder rapidement à des rôles majeurs. Ainsi, après des débuts en 1934, Robert Taylor obtient la vedette d'un film dès 1935 avant de donner la réplique à Greta Garbo dans Le roman de Marguerite Gautier (George Cukor, 1937), adaptation de La Dame aux Camélias, de Dumas fils. Devenu une star américaine, l'acteur s'impose dans des rôles de héros romantiques tels Ivanhoë (Richard Thorpe, 1952) ou Lancelot dans Les chevaliers de la table ronde (id., 1954). Sa carrière est aussi marquée par un grand nombre de westerns signés William A. Wellman (Convoi de femmes, 1950), John Sturges (Le trésor du pendu, 1958) ou Michael Curtiz (Le bourreau du Nevada, 1959). S'il joue le plus souvent les cow-boys au grand coeur, Robert Taylor ne dédaigne pas enfiler parfois le costume de personnages plus sombres comme celui de Billy the Kid dans Le réfractaire (David Miller, 1941), de tueur fou de bisons dans Dernière chasse (Richard Brooks, 1956) ou de flic corrompu dans Sur la trace du crime (Roy Rowland, 1954). Avec une centaine de films à son actif, Robert Taylor aura marqué le cinéma américain du milieu du XXe siècle.
