Formation
Jack Nicholson exerce plusieurs petits métiers à Los Angeles avant d'être engagé par la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer au service du courrier du département animation. Il suit des cours d'art dramatique et fait de la figuration au Los Angeles Players Ring Theatre.
Carrière au cinéma
En 1958, Jack Nicholson débute au cinéma dans The Cry baby killer de Jus Addis. Il poursuit sa carrière dans des films réalisés par Roger Corman (The Little shop of horrors, 1961 ; The Raven, 1963 ; The Terror, 1963). Il écrit le scénario de deux longs-métrages réalisés par Monte Hellman, Flight to fury (1964) et Ride in the whirlwind (L'Ouragan de la vengeance , 1967), dans lesquels il interprète le rôle principal. Malgré l'échec de ces films, l'acteur est remarqué.
En 1968, il écrit et produit Head, un documentaire sur la drogue réalisé par Bob Rafelson. C'est en 1969 qu'il accède à la notoriété mondiale avec son personnage d'avocat marginal dans Easy rider (1968) de Dennis Hopper. Les rôles qu'il interprète expriment un certain mal de vivre et revendiquent un refus des normes. Ainsi, on le retrouve en musicien devenu ouvrier dans Five easy pieces (5 pièces faciles, 1970) ou en vagabond assassin dans The Postman always rings twice (Le Facteur sonne toujours deux fois, 1980), deux films de Bob Rafelson.
En 1970, Nicholson signe son premier long métrage : Drive he said (Vas-y fonce). Il joue pour Roman Polanski (Chinatown, 1974) et Michelangelo Antonioni (Profession : reporter, id.). Acteur introspectif, il cède à des excès à la limite du cabotinage, mais dans One flew over the cuckoo's nest (Vol au-dessus d'un nid de coucou, 1975) de Milos Forman, il maîtrise cette exubérance. Il renoue avec la mise en scène en 1978 avec Goin' south (En route pour le Sud).
En 1980, Stanley Kubrick réinvente le film d'épouvante. Il lui offre un véritable rôle de composition dans Shining, adapté de l'oeuvre de Stephen King, où Nicholson exerce son talent en incarnant un écrivain schizophrène et possédé. Dans les années 1980, sa présence à l'affiche d'un film représente un atout considérable. Il campe l'écrivain Eugene O'Neill dans Reds (1981) de Warren Beatty, un tueur de la mafia dans L'Honneur des Prizzi (1985) de John Huston, le diable dans The Witches of Eastwick (Les Sorcières d'Eastwick, 1987) de George Miller, l'ignoble Joker de Batman (1989) de Tim Burton.
En 1990, il tourne son troisième film, The Two Jakes, suite de Chinatown. Son charisme et son regard inquiétant sont utilisés par Rob Reiner pour interpréter un colonel fanatique dans Des hommes d'honneur (1992). Danny De Vito lui confie le rôle du célèbre syndicaliste américain Hoffa (1992). Dans Wolf (1993) de Mike Nichols, il se transforme en loup-garou, et dans The Crossing guard (1995) de Sean Penn, il joue un père vengeur. En 1997, il touche un large public dans une comédie de James L. Brooks, Pour le pire et pour le meilleur, sa prestation d'un auteur névrosé et attachant lui vaut un nouvel Oscar.
A partir des années 2000, les apparitions de Jack Nicholson sont de moins en moins fréquentes. On retiendra la comédie romantique Tout peut arriver (Nancy Meyers, 2003), où il tombe amoureux de la mère de sa petite amie, partageant l'affiche avec Diane Keaton. En 2005 Scorsese le dirige dans Les Infiltrés, l'acteur y incarne un parrain de la mafia irlandaise de Boston. En 2008 il est à l'affiche de Sans plus attendre (Rob Reiner) avec Morgan Freeman : à la veille de leur mort prochaine, les deux personnages décident de réaliser les rêves de toute leur vie.
