Formation
Dès son plus jeune âge, Ed Wood aspire à faire du cinéma. Il travaille comme accessoiriste pour différents studios à partir de 1948, puis devient régisseur général.
Carrière au cinéma
Absent de la plupart des histoires officielles du cinéma, Ed Wood doit une soudaine notoriété au film réalisé à sa gloire par Tim Burton (Ed Wood, 1994). Celui qui fut surnommé "le plus mauvais cinéaste de tous les temps" dans les années 1980 par un magazine américain est depuis devenu un cinéaste culte. S'il est bien difficile d'identifier des qualités artistiques ou techniques dans son indigente production, il faut bien convenir de son inégalable candeur vis-à-vis d'un art qu'il vénérait. Il se trouve de nombreux cinéphiles pour admirer les dialogues loufoques de Glen or Glenda (1953), comédie sur le travestissement (second "vice" d'Ed Wood, après le cinéma) ou Plan 9 from outer space (1959), délirant pastiche des films de science-fiction. Usage de stock-shots, raccords improbables, trucages dérisoires, comédiens de pacotille : rien n'effraie l'auteur de ces films de série Z produits avec quelques dollars. L'exhumation de l'oeuvre d'Ed Wood a par ailleurs permis de mettre au jour l'émouvante amitié liant le cinéaste à Bela Lugosi, ex-Dracula oublié qui crut avec lui en sa dernière chance de gloire (The Bride of the monster, 1955).
