Formation
Elwood Dager (il devient John en 1912) apparaît pour la première fois sur les planches en 1900. Il n'a alors que treize ans. En 1905, il officie comme acteur et régisseur au sein d'une troupe itinérante. En 1910, il fait ses armes à Broadway et, en 1913, signe sa première mise en scène.
Carrière au cinéma
John Cromwell arrive en 1928 à Hollywood, précédé d'une solide réputation de direction d'acteurs de théâtre. En 1929, il dirige avec Edward Sutherland son premier film, Close harmony. Il accède à la notoriété avec Street of chance (1930) et Tom Sawyer (id.). Il excelle dans la direction des actrices. Katharine Hepburn, Anne Harding, Bette Davis et Hedy Lamarr donnent sous sa férule le meilleur d'elles-mêmes dans, respectivement, Spitfire (1934), Fontaine (id.), Of human bondage (id.), et Casbah (1938), remake américain du Pépé le Moko de Julien Duvivier (1936). Réalisateur exigeant, scrupuleux et toujours attentif aux spécificités visuelles du cinéma, doublé d'un fin lettré, Cromwell se spécialise dans l'adaptation littéraire : Mark Twain (Tom Sawyer), Charles Dickens (Rich man's folly, 1931, d'après Dombey and son), Somerset Maughan (Of human bondage), entre autres. En 1944, il réussit un magistral hymne aux valeurs familiales, chrétiennes et patriotiques de l'Amérique : Depuis ton départ. En 1946, il dirige Humphrey Bogart dans un film policier, En marge de l'enquête, où il utilise avec intelligence toutes les ficelles du flash back, avant d'aborder la vie carcérale des femmes dans Femmes en cage (1950), film aux éclairages expressionnistes. En plein maccarthysme, il est contraint de quitter Hollywood pour revenir à ses premières amours, le théâtre. En 1958, il revient à la réalisation avec The Goddess. Il tourne ensuite à l'étranger : The Scavengers (1959) aux Philippines et A matter of morals (1961) en Suède. En 1977 et 1978, il fait l'acteur pour les deux dernières fois dans des films de Robert Altman : Trois femmes et Un mariage, où il campe avec maîtrise un évêque gâteux.
Autres activités
John Cromwell n'a jamais abandonné le théâtre. Il y est auteur, producteur, metteur en scène et acteur.
