Formation
Blake Edwards grandit à Hollywood et fait ses premiers pas comme coursier et figurant. Après de nombreux petits rôles, il estime qu'il n'a pas la vocation d'acteur et devient scénariste. Il écrit pour la télévision et la radio.
Carrière au cinéma
Le premier succès de Blake Edwards est une comédie dont l'action se situe sur un porte-avions, au milieu du Pacifique, en pleine seconde guerre mondiale : Opération jupons (1959). Situation burlesque, comédie sophistiquée, le réalisateur alterne scènes drôles et tristes. Durant les années 1960, Blake Edwards excelle dans tous les genres, imprimant chaque film de son discours tonique et anticonformiste : le drame avec Le jour du vin et des roses (1962) qui traite de l'alcoolisme, la comédie snob avec Diamants sur canapé (1960) et le triomphal La panthère rose (1962) avec Peter Sellers, suivi de Quand l'inspecteur s'en mêle la même année. Après l'échec de La grande course autour du monde (1965), le réalisateur connaît une dizaine d'années sombres, malgré le succès mondial du désopilant The party (1968), une farce situationniste sans parole. Après Le retour de la panthère rose (1975), le réalisateur se consacre à Elle (1979), variation sur les angoisses du vieillissement masculin. Avec S.O.B., il poursuit sa quête autobiographique, dénonçant dans une satire vengeresse le système hollywoodien. Avec Victor, Victoria (1981), Blake Edwards s'interroge sur l'ambivalence des sexes. La panthère rose n'a pas fini de hanter le réalisateur qui, malgré la mort de Peter Sellers, prolonge la saga avec A la recherche de la panthère rose (1982).
Autres activités
Blake Edwards écrit un certain nombre de scénarios pour le cinéma, dont Panhandle et Stampede de Lesley Selander - films qu'il produit - ou Sound off, All ashore et Drive a crooked road de Richard Quine.
A la radio, il crée les deux programmes Richard Diamond, private detective et Yours truly, Johnny Dollar (1949) et The line-up (1950).
A la télévision, il intervient dans des séries comme scénariste, créateur, producteur ou réalisateur.
