Formation
Kenneth Branagh passe son enfance à Reading, en Angleterre. Contre l'avis de son père charpentier, il mène des études théâtrales à la Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Il monte pour la première fois sur scène en 1982, dans Another country de Julian Mitchell. Ce succès et son talent lui permettent de rejoindre la troupe de la Royal Shakespeare Company. En 1986, il monte sa propre compagnie. Son talent et sa boulimie de travail lui valent une reconnaissance immédiate.
Carrière au cinéma
Kenneth Branagh, déjà auréolé d'une gloire fulgurante au théâtre, met sa fougue et son dynamisme au service du cinéma à partir de 1989, quand il signe Henry V, dont il interprète le rôle titre. Ce film ambitieux, qui ne cesse d'être comparé à celui de Laurence Olivier réalisé en 1944, révèle un cinéaste stimulant, à défaut d'être toujours inventif. Ce grand succès public et critique est bientôt suivi d'un polar d'honnête facture, Dead again (1991), puis de Beaucoup de bruit pour rien (1992), nouvelle adaptation de Shakespeare dont le charme repose essentiellement sur la distribution britannico-américaine. Son Frankenstein (1994), qui lui vaut de nombreuses critiques, mérite un meilleur jugement. Kenneth Branagh est avant tout un bon directeur d'acteurs. A cet égard, son film le plus personnel et sans doute le plus réussi est Peter's friends (1992), comédie douce-amère où il fait preuve de retenue dans la réalisation, comme dans l'interprétation.
Après un monumental Hamlet (1996), Branagh se consacre sans grand bonheur à la seule discipline d'acteur. S'il est très critiqué dans Celebrity (1998) de Woody Allen, où on lui reproche de singer les tics du célèbre névrosé new-yorkais, les films dans lesquels il joue suscitent au mieux l'indifférence. En 2001 il tient un second rôle dans Harry Potter et la chambre ses secrets (Chris Colombus). A nouveau réalisateur en 2006, il signe La flûte enchantée d'après l'opéra de Mozart mais dont l'action est transposée en pleine première guerre mondiale ; le film est plutôt bien reçu par la critique et le public.
Rien ne semble faire peur à Kenneth Branagh car il dirige en 2010 le titanesque Thor, revisitant l'univers des supers héros mythologiques ! En parallèle il joue dans Good morning England (Richard Curtis, 2008) le très conservateur et carricatural Sir Alistair Dormandy, qui a juré l'éradication des radios pirates. Son interprétation de Laurence Olivier dans My week with Marilyn (Simon Curtis, 2010) lui vaut l'Oscar du meilleur second rôle masculin.
Autres activités
Kenneth Branagh poursuit une carrière active au théâtre mais aussi à la télévision où il incarne le célèbre inspecteur Wallander.
