Formation
Dès son adolescence, Richard Attenborough s'intéresse au théâtre. En 1940, il entre à la Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Avant la fin de ses études, il est remarqué par l'imprésario Alan Parker. Il débute une carrière théâtrale en 1941. En juin 1943, il s'engage dans la Royal Air Force où il travaille dans le service cinématographique.
Carrière au cinéma
Richard Attenborough est un spécialiste des films de guerre et des fresques historiques. Il débute sa carrière au cinéma comme acteur. En 1941, il joue dans un des grands classiques du cinéma britannique, In which we serve (Noel Coward et David Lean). En 1959, après de nombreux rôles dans une cinquantaine de films - de guerre pour la plupart - emblématiques de la production britannique des années 1950, il fonde, avec Bryan Forbes, la société de production Beaver Films Ltd. Cela ne l'empêche pas de se distinguer dans deux grands rôles : un travailleur refusant l'autorité des syndicats (The angry silence, 1960, Guy Green) et un mari dominé par sa femme (Seance on a wet afternoon, 1964, Bryan Forbes). Il s'illustre également dans des productions à grand budget : The great escape(1964, John Sturges) qui lui permet d'accéder à la reconnaissance internationale, mais aussi The sand pebbles - La canonnière du Yang-Tsé (1966, Robert Wise) ; Dr. Dolittle (1967, Richard Fleischer). A la fin des années 1970, il met sa carrière d'acteur entre parenthèses et se consacre essentiellement à la réalisation. Son premier long métrage, Oh ! what a lovely war ! est une satire de la guerre et des nationalismes sous forme de comédie musicale. Sarcastique et anticonformiste, le film fait scandale. Suit un portrait de Winston Churchill : Young Churchill (1972). Dans A bridge too far (1976), il traite son thème favori : la guerre. Le film, servi par une pléthore d'acteurs en vue (de Sean Connery à Laurence Olivier, en passant par James Caan, Michael Caine, Dirk Bogarde et Hardy Kruger), s'inspire de l'opération Market Garden qui coûta la vie à 17 000 soldats alliés en 1944. En 1982, il mène à terme un projet mûri depuis vingt ans : une fresque épique retraçant la vie de Gandhi. Le film est couvert de récompenses, dont plusieurs Oscars. Il s'intéresse à une autre grande cause avec Cry freedom (1987), un film sur l'apartheid qui veille à ménager les susceptibilités. Après Chaplin (1992), une hagiographie du célèbre acteur-réalisateur, il tourne un mélo, Shadowlands (1993). On le retrouve acteur dans deux grands succès du box-office, Jurassic Park (1993, Steven Spielberg), puis dans sa suite Le monde perdu (1996).
Autres activités
En 1956, Richard Attenborough joue dans la série télévisée Talk of many things. Il assure la présidence de la Royal Academy of Dramatic Art de Londres à partir de 1963. Depuis 1986, il préside la chaîne de télévision Channel Four.
