Formation
Lloyd Bacon débute sa carrière au théâtre dans Salomé d'Oscar Wilde. Passé au cinéma, il rejoint Chaplin à la Mutual avant de devenir metteur en scène et de diriger plusieurs films pour Lloyd Hamilton et Mack Sennett entre 1921 et 1926.
Carrière au cinéma
Interprète aux côtés de Charles Chaplin et de Ben Turpin pendant le cinéma muet, Lloyd Bacon se fait connaître dès 1928 en réalisant les premères comédies-musicales hollywoodiennes : Le Fou chantant, 42ème rue, Prologues, ou encore Wonder Bar...
Sous contrat avec la Warner à partir de 1926, Lloyd Bacon porte à l'écran une centaine de scénarios, aussi bien des films d'aventures (Moby Dick, 1930) que des polars (San Quentin, 1937) ou des comédies (Miss Grain de sel, 1949). Mais c'est dans un autre genre, celui de la comédie musicale, qu'il va marquer les esprits. Avec Le Fou chantant (1928) interprété par le chanteur Al Jolson, le metteur en scène entre dans l'ère du cinéma parlant. Cinq ans plus tard, il récidive avec 42e Rue (1932) sur des chorégraphies de Busby Berkeley, avec Warner Baxter et Ginger Rogers. Le réalisateur introduit le spectateur dans les coulisses du music-hall. Profitant de ces succès, Lloyd Bacon poursuit dans ce registre avec I Wonder who's Kissing Her Now (1947) et I don't Care Girl (1953) tout en réalisant plusieurs westerns ou films d'aventures. Parti de la Warner en 1944, il se tourne vers les autres grandes maisons de production sans jamais retrouver l'excellence de ses débuts, sauf avec The French Line (1953), une comédie musicale cynique sur l'argent.
