Formation
Après des études d'anglais, Michael Winterbottom se forme au métier de réalisateur à Bristol et à Londres. Monteur pour la télévision, il réalise plusieurs documentaires en 1988, dont deux sur le cinéaste suédois Ingmar Bergman.
Carrière au cinéma
Avec Butterfly Kiss (1995), un road-movie au féminin, violent et désespéré, Michael Winterbottom signe un premier long métrage remarqué. L'année suivante, il réalise Go now (1996), comédie dramatique retraçant le parcours d'un jeune homme atteint de sclérose en plaques. Le cinéaste livre ensuite sa vision cynique de la société anglaise de la fin du XIXe siècle avec Jude (1996), adapté du roman de Thomas Hardy, Jude, l'Obscur. Cinéaste réaliste, Winterbottom signe ensuite I Want You (1997), comédie dramatique mettant en scène deux écorchés vifs dans un petit village du nord de l'Angleterre. Wonderland (1998) dresse le portrait intimiste et réaliste d'une famille de Londres. Fan de rock, Winterbottom réalise 24 hour party people (2001) sur le label de disques de Manchester : Factory (Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays...) puis 9 songs (2004), un film interdit au moins de 18 ans où jeux érotiques côtoient extraits de concerts filmés des principaux groupes du moment (Von Bondies, Primal Screem, Franz Ferdinand, Black Rebel Motorcycle club...). L'actualité lui offre également matière à cinéma : Bienvenue à Sarajevo (1996) est une fiction dont le conflit yougoslave constitue la toile de fond. Michael Winterbottom réitère l'expérience avec In this world (2002) sur deux réfugiés afghans au Pakistan cherchant à gagner la Grande-Bretagne ; The Road to Guantanamo (2005) sur les " Trois de Tipton ", film mi-documentaire mi-fiction sur les trois prisonniers britanniques du camp de Guantanamo (film qui vaut à Winterbottom l'Ours d'Argent du meilleur réalisateur au festival international du film de Berlin 2006). Avec Un coeur invaincu (2007), Winterbottom revient sur l'après-11 septembre en s'intéressant à la vie et la disparition de Daniel Pearl, journaliste américain qui enquêtait sur les ramifications terroristes d'Al-Qaida au Pakistan.
