Carrière au cinéma
Venu du théâtre, Jim Sheridan se lance dans la réalisation en 1989 avec My Left Foot, le portrait touchant du peintre, poète et romancier handicapé Christy Brown, qui ne peut utiliser que son pied gauche pour peindre. Ce premier essai, salué par l'ensemble de la critique, obtient deux oscars. L'année suivante, The Field (1990), inspiré d'un fait divers, décrit le désarroi d'un paysan irlandais acculé au meurtre pour conserver la terre qu'il a toujours cultivée. Avec Au nom du père (1991), le cinéaste irlandais dénonce la répression anglaise en Irlande en adaptant le récit autobiographique de Gerry Conlon, accusé d'être coauteur d'un attentat. Dans la même veine, The Boxer (1998) est une nouvelle critique du conflit anglo-irlandais.
Autres activités
Jim Sheridan est scénariste à ses heures. Il est l'auteur du scénario du Cheval qui venait de la mer (M. Newell, 1993).
