Formation
Kate Beckinsale étudie la littérature russe et française à l'Université d'Oxford. En 1991, elle débute à la télévision dans un film sur la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, Once against the wind.
Carrière au cinéma
Kate Beckinsale est une jeune star montante du cinéma britannique. Brune, fine, la moue coquine, elle est promise à une carrière internationale riche en succès. Elle débute en 1993 au cinéma dans Much ado about nothing (Beaucoup de bruit pour rien) de Kenneth Branagh, adaptation de la pièce de William Shakespeare. Elle apparaît deux ans plus tard dans Marie-Louise ou la permission de Manuel Flèche. Son rôle le plus marquant est celui de Georgie, la jeune femme de Shooting fish (1997) de Stefan Schwartz qui vient semer le trouble dans le c.ur d'un duo de Robin des Bois en herbe. La comédie remporte un large succès international. Kate Beckinsale traverse l'Atlantique pour tourner The last days of disco (1998) de Whit Stillman, dans le rôle d'une étudiante Wasp. En 2000, elle présente The golden bowl (La coupe d'or) de James Ivory au Festival de Cannes.
Autres activités
A la télévision, Kate Beckinsale joue dans Cold comfort farm de John Schlesinger, adapté de l'oeuvre de Stella Gibbons, et tient le rôle principal dans la série Emma (1997).
