Formation
Comptable de formation, Walter Pidgeon se destine au métier d'acteur après la Première Guerre mondiale. Il suit des cours de chant et d'art dramatique. Engagé dans plusieurs opérettes à Broadway en 1925, il débute parallèlement au cinéma.
Carrière au cinéma
L'avènement du cinéma parlant offre à Walter Pidgeon la possibilité de faire entendre sa voix dans plusieurs comédies musicales, dont Bride of the Regiment (John Francis Dillon, 1930) et Nuits viennoises (Alan Crosland, id.). Après une apparition dans Rockabye (1932), de George Cukor, il est engagé par Universal, où il excelle dans les emplois de gangsters (Fatal Lady, Edward Ludwig, 1936 ; Big brown eyes, Raoul Walsh, id.). En 1939, il accède aux premiers rôles dans Nick Carter, master detective (Jacques Tourneur). Son rôle de chef des guérillas sudistes de L'Escadron noir (Raoul Walsh, 1940) renforce sa notoriété. Il trouve par la suite grâce aux yeux de réalisateurs comme Fritz Lang (Chasse à l'homme, 1941), John Ford (Qu'elle était verte ma vallée, id.), William Wyler (Madame Miniver, 1942) et Vincente Minnelli (Les Ensorcelés, 1952).
Autres activités
Walter Pidgeon s'est également illustré au théâtre à Brodway : No More Ladies, Something Say et The Night of January 16th.
