Formation
Danseuse précoce, Betty Grable débute à l'âge de treize ans dans les Chorus Girls de Samuel Goldwyn. Présente sur la scène de Broadway, elle est aussi la partenaire d'Eddie Cantor dans le film Whoopee ! (Thornton Freeland, 1930).
Carrière au cinéma
La carrière cinématographique de Betty Grable décolle réellement en 1940, lorsqu'elle remplace au pied levé Alice Faye dans le rôle vedette de la comédie musicale Down Argentine way (Irving Cummings). Le public découvre alors les longues jambes de cette blonde au sourire enjôleur devenue l'une des premières pin-up du cinéma. Ses atouts lui permettent de poursuivre une brillante carrière dans les comédies musicales de la Fox, telle Pin-up girl (H. Bruce Humberstone), tourné en 1944 et destiné notamment à soutenir le moral des GI pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Après la guerre, elle se fait essentiellement remarquer dans des comédies classiques comme Comment épouser un millionnaire (Jean Negulesco, 1953) et Three for the show (Henry Coldman Potter, 1954).
Autres activités
"Pin-up" très populaire, Betty Grable reçut le surnom de "The Girl with the million dollar legs", depuis que la Fox lui assura ces jambes pour un million de dollars (1947).
