Sorti de l'université de Harvard, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. s'inscrit aux Beaux-Arts à Paris.
Carrière au cinéma
Dans l'ombre de son père, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. connaît des débuts difficiles à la Paramount, où il est cantonné dans de petits rôles de jeunes paumés. Une fois sous contrat avec la Warner, à l'avènement du parlant, il se fait remarquer dans La patrouille de l'aube (Howard Hawks, 1930) et Le petit César (Mervyn LeRoy, 1930). De retour aux Etats-Unis, il connaît la consécration grâce au Prisonnier de Zenda (John Cromwell, 1937), mais peine à rencontrer le succès en raison d'une concurrence accrue à Hollywood dans les emplois qu'il brigue, principalement des aventuriers. Engagé dans la flotte américaine durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il en revient médaillé et met à profit cette image glorieuse pour briller dans des films d'aventures comme Sinbad le marin (Richard Wallace, 1946), aux côtés de Maureen O'Hara et Anthony Quinn.
Autres activités
Douglas Fairbanks Jr. a également joué sur scène en Angleterre dans My Fair Lady (1968), The pleasure of his compagny (1970), Present laughter (1975). De 1952 à 1957, il produit le show télévisé Douglas Fairbanks Presents.
