Formation
Après avoir étudié à la New York School for Fine and Applied Arts et dans sa filiale de Paris, Gilbert Adrian débute au music-hall.
Carrière au cinéma
Costumier en chef de la MGM de 1928 à 1942, Adrian contribue au Glamour hollywoodien, en habillant notamment Greta Garbo.
Il crée ses premiers costumes au cinéma pour l'acteur vedette Rudolph Valentino dans Cobra (Joseph Henabery, 1925) et L'Aigle noir (Clarence Brown, id.). Mais c'est en habillant les femmes que le costumier connaît ses plus grands succès. Outre Greta Garbo, qui portera de 1928 à 1940 les créations les plus audacieuses (drapées et décolletés) du couturier - notamment dans La Reine Christine (Rouben,Mamoulian, 1933), Anna Karenine (Clarence Brown, 1935) et Le Roman de Marguerite Gautier (George Cukor, 1936) -, Adrian habille Jeanette MacDonald (La Veuve joyeuse, Ernst Lubitsch, 1934), Norma Shearer (Marie-Antoinette, W.S. Van Dyke, 1938), Joan Crawford (Duel de femmes, Robert Z. Leonard, 1941 ; Possédée, Curtis Bernhardt, 1946), ainsi que Janet Gaynor, devenue par la suite son épouse. Il est également le créateur des costumes du film Le Magicien d'Oz (Victor Fleming, 1938). En 1942, il fonde même sa propre maison de couture Adrian Ltd. et ne travaille plus qu'à de très rares occasions pour le cinéma jusqu'en 1952, date de sa dernière contribution (Lovely to Look at / Les Rois de la couture, Mervyn LeRoy).
Autres activités
Il travaille sur plusieurs "Musicals" de Broadway de Music Box Revue en 1922 à Camelot en 1960. Il reçoit, à titre posthume, le Tony Awards (récompenses théâtrales) du Meilleur Costumier pour cette dernière production.
