Formation
Formé à la batterie, au chant et à la danse, Cab Calloway débute à Baltimore puis à Chicago dans le groupe des Alabamians. A New York, il devient le leader des Missourians en 1929 et rejoint avec son orchestre le Cotton Club de Harlem en 1931. La même année, il enregistre l'un de ses plus grands succès, Minnie the Moocher (id.) et le célèbre Hi de Ho.
Carrière au cinéma
Comme nombre de chanteurs et musiciens noirs des années 1930, Cab Calloway apparaît dans plusieurs films musicaux. Reprenant sa célèbre chanson Minnie the Moocher, il fait une brève incursion dans The Big Broadcast (Frank Tuttle, 1932). Il réalise l'une de ses prestations les plus marquantes dans Stormy Weather (Andrew Stone, 1943), film à la gloire de l'artiste noir américain Bill Robinson. Calloway fait une dernière apparition au grand écran en 1980 dans la comédie musicale Blues Brothers (John Landis).
Autres activités
A Broadway, Cab Calloway s'illustre notamment dans Hello Dolly (1967).
