Formation
Après des études à Winchester et à Oxford, Anthony Asquith veut être metteur en scène. En 1925, recommandé par son père, Premier ministre en Angleterre, il part pour Hollywood où il réside chez Douglas Fairbanks Sr. et Mary Pickford durant deux ans. Il passe le plus clair de son temps dans les studios, où il acquiert les notions de base du métier.
Carrière au cinéma
De 1926 à 1930, Anthony Asquith réalise cinq films muets, dont le fameux Shooting Stars (1928). Son premier film parlant, Tell England (1931), qui retrace les péripéties des débarquements alliés en Turquie en 1915, est considéré comme un classique en Grande-Bretagne. Mais ses deux réalisations les plus remarquées sont les adaptations de Pygmalion, d'après George Bernard Shaw (1938), et The Importance of Being Earnest (1952), d'après Oscar Wilde. Les films tournés avant, entre ces deux films et après sont plus mièvres et peu consistants. Pour n'en citer que quelques-uns : Moscow Nights (1935), Cottage to Let (1941), The Way to the Stars (1945), The Browning Version (1950), Orders to Kill (1957), The Guns of Darkness (1961), The Yellow Rolls-Royce (1964). Cédant à une mode qui a singulièrement marqué le cinéma britannique, Anthony Asquith a réalisé plusieurs films de guerre.
