Formation
William A. Wellman participe à la Première guerre mondiale, comme ambulancier dans L'American Volunteer Motor Ambulance Corps, puis il intègre la Légion étrangère française et devient pilote dans l'escadrille Flying Corps Lafayette. Démobilisé, William Wellman devient lieutenant instructeur de l'American Air corps dans un centre d'entraînement aérien et effectue des cascades en avion pour gagner sa vie, joue dans deux films sans grand succès aux côtés de Douglas Fairbanks, dans Knickerbocker Buckaroo (1919, Albert Parker), et Evangeline (Raoul Walsh, id.)
Carrière au cinéma
William Wellman appartient à la famille des réalisateurs qui participent au succès des studios hollywoodiens dans les années 30. Il est engagé comme garçon de courses aux studios Goldwyn Pictures Corporation. Passe aux studios Fox, et après avoir été, accessoiriste, régisseur, assistant réalisateur (It's a great life, E. Mason Hopper, 1920), il débute derrière la caméra en 1923 avec quatre films The Man who won ; Big Dan ; Second hand love et Cupid's fireman. Il dirige ensuite une série de westerns The Circus cowboy (1924), Not a drum was heard (Id.) et The Vagabond trail (Id.). Il entre en 1926 aux studios de la Paramount et connaît son premier succès avec Wings (1927), un film inspiré de son expérience d'aviateur. Le film relate les exploits aériens de l'aviation pendant la Première guerre mondiale. Pour les scènes tournées en extérieur dans le Texas, le réalisateur fait appel aux meilleurs cascadeurs qui effectuent les acrobaties les plus spectaculaires du début du cinéma. Wings remporte le tout premier Oscar du meilleur film. Grâce à Beggars of life (1928), un mélodrame sur les vagabonds et les marginaux, et The Public enemy (1931), film sur un gangster lors de la prohibition, Wellman assoit sa réputation. Détestant l'injustice , ses films sociaux compte parmi les plus radicaux des années 30 : Wild Other men's women (1931) ; Boys of the road (1933) ; Heroes for sale (id.). A la fin des années 30, il est l'un des cinéastes américains les plus en vue, spécialisé dans les films d'action et d'aventure, mis en scène de façon sobre et classique. En 1937, il réalise sa première œuvre en technicolor, consacrée au milieu du cinéma, A star is born. Il enchaîne avec Nothing sacred (La Joyeuse suicidée, id.), film emblématique du genre screwball comedy. Wellman montre qu'il maîtrise la couleur. Avec Men with wings (1938), il revient aux prouesses aériennes. Mais il sait passer d'un genre à l'autre, du film sur la légion (Beau geste, 1939), au western (The Ox-bow incident, 1942 ; Buffalo Bill, 1943), au film de guerre (The story of GI Joe, 1945), en passant par les chroniques provinciales (Gallant journey, 1946). Il réalise quatre westerns originaux : Accroos the wide Missouri (Au-delà du Missouri, 1950), avec Clark Gable en trappeur ami des indiens, un hymne à la nature, aux grands espaces américains ; Westward the women (Convoi de femmes, 1951), western féministe ; Yellow sky (La Ville abandonnée, 1948), film noir transposé dans une ville fantôme perdue dans la Vallée de la Mort, adapté d'une histoire de W.R. Burnett, et Track of the cat (1954), western étrange, très stylisé, dont l'action se déroule sur deux jours dans le ranch isolé d'une famille dysfonctionnelle. Il connaît deux grands succès avec Battleground (1949) et The High and the mighty (1953), puis se retire de la profession, après avoir livré un nouveau film sur l'aviation, Lafayette Escadrille (1958).
Autres activités
William Wellman publie deux volumes autobiographiques, A short time of insanity (1974) et Growing old disgracefully (1975).
