Formation

Après avoir obtenu un diplôme d'ingénieur à l'université du Missouri, Robert Altman s'engage dans l'aviation américaine pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il écrit des nouvelles, dont certaines sont publiées. A la fin de la guerre, il vend à Hollywood deux sujets rédigés avec son ami George W. George : Christmas Eve (1947) et Bodyguard (1948). De retour à Kansas City, il réalise des films industriels.

Carrière au cinéma

Robert Altman est le cinéaste indépendant par excellence. Auteur aux inspirations diverses, toujours à contre-courant des modes hollywoodiennes, il s'approprie les genres auxquels il impose son propre style. La critique de l'Amérique domine toute son oeuvre. En 1957, il tourne son premier long métrage, The Delinquents, avec un petit budget. C'est en 1967 qu'Hollywood lui donne sa première chance. La Warner lui commande Countdown (1968), un film sur les astronautes. C'est avec M.A.S.H. (1969), les aventures d'une équipe chirurgicale pendant la guerre de Corée, que le réalisateur accède à la reconnaissance. Le film triomphe au box-office. Altman fonde sa propre maison de production, Lion's gate, afin de préserver son indépendance. Il diversifie son oeuvre en détournant les genres : le western avec McCabe and Mrs Miller (1971) ; le surnaturel avec Images (1972), film tourné en Irlande dans lequel une femme sombre dans une dépression face aux apparitions de ses anciens amants ; le film noir avec Le Privé (1973). En 1975, Nashville remporte un succès considérable. Iconoclaste et anticonformiste, Altman détruit les mythes et les héros américains (Buffalo Bill et les Indiens, 1976). Il devient le spécialiste du récit éclaté, mettant en scène de multiples histoires parallèles. Aussi à l'aise dans le lyrisme, la satire ou le réalisme, il poursuit sa diatribe de ses contemporains. Au début des années 1980, il adapte des pièces de théâtre (Streamers, 1983, d'après David Rabe). Robert Altman caricature l'armée, métaphore de la société. Après un séjour en Europe, où il tourne entre autres Beyond therapy (1987), il revient aux Etats-Unis en 1992 et triomphe avec The Player (1991), satire de l'univers hollywoodien dans laquelle défilent de nombreuses stars. Short cuts (1993) confirme l'aptitude du cinéaste à restituer une vision acerbe de la société. Dans cette adaptation de nouvelles de Raymond Carver, Altman utilise le procédé qui constitue sa marque de fabrique le "film choral" : destins croisés, montage parallèle, distribution-fleuve. Plus qu'un film sur les milieux de la mode, Prêt à porter (1994) propose une réflexion sur la vanité. Kansas City (1995) rend hommage à la ville natale du réalisateur et à sa musique de prédilection, le jazz, Jazz'34 (1996) est un documentaire reconstituant les "jam sessions" de l'époque tandis que Cookie's fortune (1999) dépeint l'univers des bluesmen du vieux Sud. Gosford Park (2002) est une peinture caustique des moeurs de la haute société britannique des années trente, réalisée comme une intrigue à la "Agatha Christe". Son dernier film, The Last Show (2006) sur une émission radiophonique sur le point de s'arrêter, est une oeuvre nostalgique sur la fin d'une époque dans le monde du spectacle, et un hommage à une Amérique en train de disparaître.

Autres activités

En 1945 il s'engage volontairement dans l'Armée de l'air et se retrouve comme co-pilote de B-24. De la fin des années 1950 au milieu des années 1960, Robert Altman travaille pour la télévision en tant que producteur, réalisateur ou scénariste. Il tourne des épisodes des séries Alfred Hitchcock presents, Maverick, Bonanza ou encore la série avant-gardiste, Tanner '88, une sorte de documentaire fictif politique. En 1982, il adapte pour le petit écran des pièces de Franck South (Rattlesnake in a cooler, Precious blood) sous le titre Two by south.
Il s'essaie à la mise en scène d'opéra avec the Rake's progress (Le Libertin, 1983) d'Igor Stravinski.
